DivorceCare

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18 (NLT)

The cycles of life, the ups and downs, the good and the bad that come our way. It was no more real to me than it was last night.

I sat at a table with Julie and John, Rachelle, Stacy, Suzy, Lisa, Bill, Linda and Kari. There was pain all around that table. Pain I had never experienced.

As the sun set behind the mountains outside our window, they began to share. Eight of the group had been divorced or separated and they had come for healing, for help, and for a chance to move on. Their experiences were different, but the results were the same—agony. They expressed it differently, but it was a common theme. They used words like numb, shocked, hurt, painful and descriptions in degrees, like extreme or excruciating. But really, the words couldn’t describe what they were feeling. But I could tell what this was. Death. They had experienced the death of their marriages. The end of oneness. Something I had never gone through myself.

These wonderful people were crushed and … they were hanging on. And I saw something else last night. I saw hope. I saw it in Bill, and I saw it in Julie. Both had gone through hard divorces, but both were healing. Bill and Julie led the group and encouraged us all by sharing this truth: It was the LORD who had rescued them, and it was fellow believers who had come alongside and encouraged them. Finally, they were out of the pit.

Yes, the cycles of life can be devastating. But last night, I saw God begin the healing process. He came close. And I … was encouraged!

LORD, rescue those who are crushed in spirit, and heal the brokenhearted. Bless this group and each one in it. Amen.

Who is He?

So if you’re serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don’t shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that’s where the action is. See things from his perspective. Your old life is dead. Your new life which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life.

Colossians 3:1-4 (The Message)

It was a bright, sunny day, and as I sat in Bob Shaw’s Sunday morning class light streamed through the windows providing a warm glow inside. People were chatting away and getting settled as Bob began to speak. These folks love their teacher, and their faces showed it.

Bob smiled and introduced our new topic. We were about to begin a series of discussions on a book written by Josh McDowell. Bob began, “The book's title says Jesus is More than a Carpenter. So what? How do you answer the question, ‘Who is Jesus?’”

As we went around the room, we got some great answers, but when Bob got to me all I could say was what I felt inside me. “He’s everything!”

And He is. I know that in my heart, He is my everything, and without Him, I am nothing. He is my life, and I hope and pray people will someday look back and say, “Yes, He was his everything … and his life showed it!”

Father, be my everything today. Fill me, use me any way You want—visible, invisible; active or quiet. May You get the glory today and everyday. Amen.

Knowing God is Near

God, we thank you; we thank you because you are near….

Psalm 75:1 (NCV)

My greatest peace comes from knowing God is near. When I know He stands beside me, that He approves of a certain direction I’ve taken or decision I’ve made with His help, I have unshakeable confidence and incredible peace.

It happened when I traveled to Saudi Arabia; it occurred when I felt led to move my family from Texas to Oregon. And as I look back, I clearly see the hand of God—adding more peace and greater confidence that He is God, my God, and oh so near!

Now I face new challenges, new decisions and again, I see God’s hand at work.

And this joy fills my soul: God, You are near!

LORD, thank You for Your promises, Your challenges and commands. Help me walk in faith knowing You are near. Amen.
