Lonnie’s Last Words to Me
We walk by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7 (NAS)
Last week, I traveled back to Sturgeon Bay and Door County, Wisconsin for a family reunion at my Aunt Rachel’s home. I hadn’t been back there in almost 17 years but I wished I had….
What a wonderful place—beautiful rocky beaches, enchanting vistas and it seemed like there was a memorable moment waiting around every corner—absolutely invigorating to the soul. And still ... of all the fun excursions, boat rides, beach visits and time with family, one simple event sticks in my mind. It was when I walked in to my Uncle Lonnie’s old office—a small room attached to the garage of that charming white house on the water. The room remained pretty much the way Lonnie left it: maps and boating charts, family pictures, and a drafting table next to the door to the garage. And there on a wall near his desk I spied a very small, handwritten note he had penned for himself.
It read,
30 day TEST
Control thoughts
Positive only
Stop thoughts on fear
Do more
Time—live each day as last one.
Lonnie wrote that note in October of 1990.
He died unexpectedly the next month. Unexpectedly. Quickly. Gone.
He died young, but I think his test was a success.
Seventeen years later, I read his words, remember a good man, and get a new lease on life.
LORD, give us wisdom to live for You. Amen.
