Virgin Birth:
Making Room for
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”
Isaiah 7:14 (NIV)
“How can this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.”
Luke 1:34-35 (NIV)
When talk show host Larry King was asked whom out of all of history he would choose to interview, he replied, “Jesus Christ.” Most interesting.
When further queried what he would ask, Larry King replied (my paraphrase), “Was the virgin birth real? Did that really happen? Because if it did, the meaning is profound.” Most thought-provoking.
Larry King understands the significance of what a virgin birth means. Many Americans don’t. Pollsters tell us a vast majority claim they believe in the virgin birth. But if that's so, why don't they live like it? Most curious.
If we really believe the virgin birth to be a true event, that means God word is true, Jesus is the Son of God … and His claims for and on my life are very real. This point is most challenging.
Larry King has thought this one through. Others should too.
Father, help us to consider Christ and what His birth really means. Help us make room—real room—in our hearts for Him. Amen.
